In today’s world, it's rare to encounter someone who hasn’t heard of Google Translate or machine translation. The general populace has marveled at the advancements in machine translation so much that there's even speculation it might eventually render human translators as obsolete. However, it might come as a surprise that research on it began nearly 90 years ago. Despite its long history, perfection in machine translation remains elusive.
Petr Smirnov-Troyanskii, a Russian-born scientist, embarked on pioneering work in machine translation during the 1930s. He was recognized for his invention of a machine capable of converting root-word sequences into translations in other languages. Sadly, Smirnov-Troyanskii passed away suddenly from a heart attack shortly after publishing his research, leaving his theories incomplete and largely unknown until the advent of the first computer.
In 1947 the machine translation revolution took a significant leap forward thanks to American scientist Warren Weaver. His letter to MIT professor Norbert Wiener outlined his ideas for machine translation, which, after encouragement from colleagues, led to a memorandum summarizing these ideas and applications of machine translation. This document sparked widespread interest and debate, propelling several universities to initiate their own research.
The first notable machine trasnlation feasibility study emerged from a collaboration between IBM and Georgetown University in 1954. Although the experiment involved translating just 49 Russian sentences with a basic vocabulary and a handful of grammar rules, its success spurred further investment in MT projects globally. This era's progress was also bolstered by advancements in linguistics, particularly the development of transformational generative grammar models.
However, the initial optimism was short-lived. By 1960, MIT's machine translation researcher Yehoshua Bar-Hillel argued that fully automatic, accurate translations were fundamentally unachievable. This skepticism was echoed by the shortcomings of the IBM and University of Washington's Mark II system. Concerns about machine translation research's inefficiency led to the formation of the ALPAC, which, in 1966, published a report criticizing this type of translation for its slowness, high costs, and inefficiency compared to human translation.
After a hiatus in machine translation research due to lack of funds, interest and feasibility, the 1980’s saw a revival thanks to technological advancements and the accessibility of personal computers. The 1990’s introduced a paradigm shift from rule-based to statistical machine translation, laying the groundwork for today's neural machine translation (NMT). NMT utilizes artificial neural networks, enabling the system to learn semantics over time, a stark contrast to the phrase-by-phrase learning of previous models.
Despite these advancements, the question of whether machine translation can replace human translators remains. Language's dynamic nature, influenced by regional dialects, new terminology, and evolving sentence structures, presents a complex challenge. While machine translation has significantly progressed over the last decade, completely eliminating miscommunication is a tall order, highlighting the ongoing necessity for human touch in global language services.
Translation solutions have indeed evolved, from rudimentary attempts to sophisticated neural machine translation systems. Yet, the essence of global communication remains a blend of technology and human expertise.
